Which genealogy platform is best overall?

There is no single best one, and the honest answer depends on your bottleneck. For breadth of licensed records in English-speaking countries, Ancestry leads; for continental Europe, MyHeritage; for British and Irish parish material, FindMyPast; for French community indexes, Geneanet; for free coverage worldwide, FamilySearch; and for reading and translating documents you already have, Vestigee. Diagnose what is blocking you before choosing.

What is the best free genealogy platform?

FamilySearch, by a wide margin. It is free, its digitisation programme covers parish and civil registers worldwide, and much of it is browsable image by image even where nothing has been indexed. WikiTree is the best free option for a collaborative, well-sourced shared tree.

Do I need more than one genealogy subscription?

Often yes, and not permanently. Collections are exclusive, so covering a family that moved between countries usually means using two platforms — but genealogy is seasonal, so subscribe while you are actively mining a collection and cancel when you stop opening it.

Which platform is best for French genealogy?

Geneanet for volunteer-built parish indexes and the community around them, Filae for name-searchable indexed civil registration, and Vestigee for reading the unindexed register images that French departmental archives publish in enormous quantities. Most serious French research combines at least two of the three.

Is desktop genealogy software still worth using?

Yes, as your master copy. Programs like Heredis or Gramps keep the data on your machine, work offline and cannot change their terms on you. The trade-off is weaker record search, hints and collaboration, and backups become your responsibility. GEDCOM is what lets you run a desktop master alongside an online platform.

How do I move my family tree between platforms?

Export a GEDCOM from the platform you are leaving and import it into the new one. People, dates, places, relationships and notes transfer. Attached media are handled differently everywhere, so download images separately, and keep the GEDCOM file itself as a backup.

Which platform has the most DNA matches?

Ancestry's pool is generally the largest, with MyHeritage strong in Europe. What matters is that a match only exists if the other person tested in that pool, so download your raw data and consider uploading it wherever transfers are accepted rather than testing repeatedly.

What can AI genealogy tools do that record libraries cannot?

Read. Transcribing handwritten registers, translating Latin or German entries, extracting names and dates and processing documents nobody has indexed — including the papers in your own house — is a different capability from holding a licensed collection. The two are complementary rather than competing.

How do I test a platform before paying?

Four checks: search one ancestor, one place, one decade on the free search; put your hardest document through its transcription; create three people and export a GEDCOM to confirm you can leave; and find the cancellation page before subscribing.

Should I trust other people's family trees?

Use them as leads, never as evidence. An unsourced link copied into hundreds of trees looks like consensus and is still one unverified guess. Follow the tree to the record, then judge the record.
