What is a census record in genealogy?

A government snapshot of who was found in a place on a given night or when the form was filled. Genealogists reuse it to see a whole household: parents, children, boarders and neighbours. It is not a birth act and it was written from answers given at the door.

Why do ages and names change from one census to the next?

People rounded ages, enumerators heard foreign names badly, and ditto marks ran down a column. A wife who ages two years in a decade is a warning. Rebuild a table of year, address, names and ages instead of trusting a single index row as a birth year.

Should I trust the census index or open the image?

Open the image. Indexes miss boarders, invert ages and split a surname across two pages. Read every line in the dwelling and the dwellings on either side. Neighbours marry each other and later appear as witnesses on church and civil acts.

When do census lists become public?

It depends on the country. The United States generally releases a federal census seventy-two years after it was taken. French nominative lists have their own delays. A closed year will not have a legal public image, regardless of advertisements.

Is a French recensement the same as the état civil?

No. The recensement de population is a communal list for a given year. The état civil is the legal register of births, marriages and deaths. Use the census to find who lived together, then confirm events in the civil acts.

What happened to the 1890 US census?

Almost all of the 1890 federal population schedules were destroyed after a fire and later disposal. You fill that decade with city directories, state censuses where they exist, and the 1880 and 1900 federal lists. Absence from 1890 is not evidence the family died.

Are boarders and servants worth researching?

Yes. Boarders are often nephews or future sons-in-law. Servants are sometimes kin. Ignoring anyone who is not labelled family is how people miss the witness who later unlocks a marriage or a death.

Can a census replace a birth or marriage record?

No. It will not give a maiden name as reliably as a marriage act, or a parent pair as reliably as a civil birth. It shows who was in the household that year, which tells you which register to open next. Use several censuses as a timeline, then find the acts.
