Which record type should I always look for first?

A marriage record. It typically names both spouses, their ages or birth dates, their parents, occupations, residences and witnesses — one document that opens two families at once.

What is the difference between a civil record and a parish record?

Parish registers were kept by churches, recording baptism, marriage and burial; civil registration was kept by the state, recording birth, marriage and death. In much of Europe the changeover happened around the French Revolution, so which one exists depends on your date and place.

Why are censuses so useful even though they contain errors?

Because they show a household together at a moment in time, with ages, birthplaces and relationships side by side. The details are second-hand and often wrong by a few years, but the structure they reveal is what links generations.

What can a death record tell me that a birth record cannot?

Who was present and who reported the death — usually a spouse, child, neighbour or employer. Those names place the person in a living network, and the informant is frequently a relative you had not identified.

Are notarial and land records worth the effort?

Once you pass the era of good registers, they often become the best sources available. Wills, dowry contracts and estate inventories name children, spouses and in-laws explicitly, and they survive where parish books do not.

How do I know whether a record is a primary source?

Ask who wrote it, when, and from what knowledge. A birth registered by the father days after the event is primary; an age on a marriage certificate twenty years later is a statement, and an index entry is someone's reading of a document, not the document.

What records exist for people who never owned property?

More than most people expect: military conscription lists, school registers, workhouse and hospital admissions, police residence registers, union and employer records, newspapers and cemetery books all recorded people with nothing to inherit.

How recent can I search before privacy rules stop me?

It varies by country and record type — often around a century for full birth records and shorter for deaths. Recent entries usually require proving your descent and requesting a copy from the office that holds the register.
