How much of a family story is usually true?

The shape more often than the detail. A story about "land taken by the government" or "a title in the family" typically encodes a real event that has been compressed and dramatised over three or four retellings.

How do I test a family legend?

Split it into checkable claims — a place, a date range, an occupation, an institution — and test them one at a time. "We came over on a ship in 1912" becomes a passenger-list query; "we were nobility" becomes a search for a specific documented title.

What if the records contradict the story?

Keep both and record the discrepancy. Why a family told a different version is itself family history — respectability, migration status and wartime silence all produced deliberate revisions worth documenting.

Are oral history interviews worth recording formally?

Yes, and record the audio. A transcript loses hesitation, dialect and the difference between "I saw" and "I was told" — and those distinctions are what let a later researcher weigh the testimony.

Which family stories are most often distorted?

Claims of noble descent, of a name changed at a border, of a lost inheritance, and of a famous relative. All four are common, and all four are usually a genuine, more modest fact that grew in the retelling.

How do I evaluate conflicting accounts from two relatives?

Weigh proximity and independence: who was present, who heard it second-hand, and whether both heard it from the same person. Two relatives repeating one grandmother are one source, not two.

Can photographs verify a story?

They can anchor it. A uniform confirms service, a shopfront confirms a trade, a studio stamp confirms a town in a period — each turning a claim into a searchable, dated location.

How should I present an unverified story in my tree?

As a labelled family tradition with its source and date of collection, kept separate from sourced facts. Labelled uncertainty is useful to everyone who comes after you; unlabelled uncertainty becomes their brick wall.
