No. Births were written in local parish books, town halls and county ledgers. What is free is scattered: FamilySearch films, civil archive viewers, and some city or state scans. A landing page that promises the world is usually selling an index or a reprint.

Is FamilySearch really free for historical births?

Yes for looking, with an account. Some collections are indexed and some are browse-only. A few images are restricted to a FamilySearch centre because of contracts with the archive that owns the book. Always note the archive citation on the film.

Where are French birth registers online for free?

On the Archives départementales sites, commune by commune, once the legal communication delay has passed. You browse tables and acts; there is no national free-birth API. Neighbouring departments differ in what has been digitised.

Why do I still have to pay for an English birth certificate?

The civil index is widely available; the image of a General Register Office certificate is a separate order unless a later copy sits in an archive you can visit. Parish baptisms before 1837 are a different, often free, church-record problem.

Are commercial genealogy indexes the same as exclusive records?

Sites that build a “certificate” from user trees produce a pretty file with no standing. An official act is an entry in a register or a copy issued by the office that keeps that register. If there is no archive citation, it is not a birth record.

How do I keep a birth search free as long as possible?

Identify the registering office, search FamilySearch and the archive viewer for that office and year, use decennial or quarterly tables to reach a folio, and browse when the name is wrong. Pay for an index only after you know the book is not already online.
