What is a genealogical brick wall?

A line that stops because the next document cannot be found — not because it never existed. Most walls are a records problem (wrong place searched, register not digitised, name spelled differently) rather than the end of a family.

What should I try first when a line stops?

Go sideways before going back. Research the siblings, the witnesses and the godparents of your last confirmed ancestor: their records routinely name the parents you are missing, because your ancestor's own record is the one that is absent.

How can AI help with a wall I have worked on for years?

By making unindexed material searchable and by widening name matching. A register nobody has indexed becomes a full-text search once transcribed, and phonetic matching surfaces the spellings you never thought to try.

Could the record I need simply be lost?

Sometimes, and it is worth establishing early. Archive catalogues state what was destroyed by fire, war or flood; knowing a register is gone converts an open-ended search into a search for a substitute source.

What substitute sources work when registers are gone?

Notarial acts, tax and land rolls, military conscription lists, church membership and confirmation lists, guild and apprenticeship papers, and newspapers. Each records people the destroyed register would have covered.

Am I looking in the right place at all?

Check the administrative history before searching harder. Parish boundaries were redrawn, districts merged, borders moved; a village's records may sit in an archive in another department, region or country entirely.

When is DNA the right tool for a brick wall?

When the wall is a parentage question rather than a missing-document question. Clusters of matches around one couple tell you which family to research, which is different from proving the link — the record still has to be found.

How do I keep a stalled line from wasting more time?

Write down what you have searched, what you concluded, and the one record that would settle it. Then park it and set a reminder: digitisation programmes publish new registers constantly, and a documented pause resumes in minutes.
