Which immigration records name the family left behind?

Passenger manifests from the twentieth century often list a relative in the country of origin and the person joined at the destination — two links in one line, and frequently the only bridge between an old-country village and a new-country address.

How do I find an ancestor whose name was changed on arrival?

Search the original-language form and the phonetic renderings a clerk would have written, and search on the ship, the date and the travelling companions rather than the name. Names were rarely changed at the border by officials — they were adapted afterwards by the family.

What is the difference between emigration and immigration records?

Emigration records were created at departure — police permits, passport applications, port registers — and immigration records at arrival. The departure side usually gives the precise home village, which is the detail that matters most.

Do naturalisation files help genealogy?

They are among the richest sources available: birth date and place, arrival date and ship, spouse and children, addresses, sometimes a photograph and a renunciation of a former nationality — all in one dossier.

How do I trace a family that migrated in stages?

Follow the network rather than the individual. Chain migration is the norm: one relative goes first, sends for others, and the addresses and sponsors in each record link people who moved years apart.

What if the village name no longer exists?

It usually still exists under another name or another country. Gazetteers of historical place names and border-change maps resolve most cases, and the record's spelling is often a transcription of how the name sounded rather than how it was written.

Are there records for people who were refused entry or returned?

Yes — detention and rejection registers, medical inspection notes and return passenger lists. Not everyone who sailed stayed, and a return crossing explains a family that appears to vanish overseas.

How can AI translation help with immigration documents?

Departure paperwork is in the language of the country of origin, and immigration files often contain a foreign-language birth certificate. Draft translation turns those into something you can read and search, with names and dates verified against the image.
