What is AI genealogy research?

AI genealogy research is family history research where software does the mechanical work: transcribing handwritten records, matching names across collections, spotting date conflicts and suggesting which document to look at next. You still decide what is true — the AI reads and proposes, you verify against the source.

Does AI replace traditional genealogy methods?

No. It removes the slow parts — reading difficult handwriting, scanning thousands of index entries, translating a foreign-language certificate — and leaves the parts that need judgement to you: deciding whether two people with the same name are the same person, and whether a source is trustworthy.

How accurate is AI handwriting recognition on old records?

On clean nineteenth-century civil registration it is usually very good; on faded parish registers, unusual regional scripts or heavy abbreviation it makes mistakes. Treat a transcription as a first pass: read it next to the image, and correct names and dates before you attach them to a person.

Where do I start if I only know my parents and grandparents?

That is enough. Enter what you know with dates and places as precisely as you can, then work outward one generation at a time, confirming each link with a record. Vague places ("somewhere in Poland") slow AI matching down more than missing dates do, so add detail where you have it.

What kinds of records can AI process?

Birth, marriage and death records, censuses, parish registers, military and immigration files, newspapers, obituaries and cemetery records. Anything you can photograph or scan can be transcribed, including a certificate you already have in a family folder.

How much time does AI actually save?

The saving is concentrated in reading and indexing. A page of handwritten census that takes fifteen minutes to decipher by hand comes back in seconds, and a search that would mean paging through an unindexed register becomes a query. Verification takes exactly as long as it always did.

Can AI invent ancestors that never existed?

A suggestion engine can propose a wrong link — same name, plausible dates, different family. That is why every proposal should come with the record behind it. If a suggested ancestor has no source you can open and read, do not accept it into your tree.

Is my family data private when I use AI tools?

It depends on the platform, so check before uploading. On Vestigee your tree is private to your account unless you invite someone, uploads are encrypted, and you can export everything as a GEDCOM and delete it whenever you want.
