What is the difference between banns, a license and a marriage act?

Banns announced an intended wedding and can exist when the ceremony happened elsewhere. A license or application was permission to marry and often asked ages and parents. The civil or parish act is the legal or religious entry that the wedding took place. They are not copies of each other.

Why is a marriage record so useful for genealogy?

It can name two people, two sets of parents, a maiden name, previous spouses, witnesses and the place that joined the households. That is often the fastest way to connect a bride to her birth surname and to the next generation of searches.

Where was a marriage usually registered?

Where the wedding was made legal, which is not always where the couple later lived. Search the bride's parish, the groom's town, a city registry and any border town they could reach, using the first census in which they appear as a married couple as a date hint.

Should I search both civil and church marriage records?

Yes. The civil act is the legal source where civil registration exists; the parish register for the same week can add witnesses, a consanguinity note or a different spelling of the mother's name. Where civil registration started late, the church book is the record.

How do I research a widow who remarried under her previous husband's name?

Look for wording such as widow, veuve or relicta on the later marriage, then search for her earlier marriage and the first husband's death. If you only search her maiden name, you will miss the second wedding and the children of that union.

Are ages on a marriage record reliable?

Treat them as estimates unless the same act also gives exact birth dates. Clerks copied what they were told. When a marriage age disagrees with a baptism or civil birth, prefer the earlier record and keep the conflict in your notes.

Why should I read the marriages above and below my couple?

Registers are chronological. Neighbouring entries are often siblings marrying in the same season, or witnesses who marry each other later. Indexes drop that neighbourhood, which is how you solve a common-name problem.

Are recent marriage records public?

Usually not in full. Recent marriages are often closed or issued only as extracts to the parties. Historical registers in archives are a different series. Follow the archive's rules and do not treat a modern extract like a nineteenth-century act you can publish.
