What do military records add that civil records do not?

A physical and biographical description of a person: height, eye colour, scars, literacy, trade, next of kin, postings and conduct. For many working ancestors it is the only document that describes them as an individual.

Do conscription lists cover men who never served?

Yes, and that is what makes them so useful. Countries with universal conscription registered whole cohorts of young men, including those exempted or rejected — a near-census of one age group, with birthplace and parents.

How do I find a service record without a unit number?

Work from the recruitment district that matches the birthplace, then the birth year cohort. Conscription archives are organised geographically and by class year, so place plus year is usually enough without knowing the regiment.

What if the service file was destroyed?

Reconstruct from the surrounding paperwork: medal rolls, pension and widow's pension files, unit war diaries, casualty lists, hospital admissions and newspaper reports. Personnel files burned in several countries, but the administrative traces did not.

Are pension records useful for female ancestors?

Very. A widow's pension claim had to prove the marriage and the children, so the file often contains copies of certificates that no longer survive elsewhere, plus her addresses over many years.

How do I read abbreviations on a military form?

Use the archive's own glossary for that record series first, since abbreviations are institution-specific. Transcription helps with the handwriting, but the meaning of a code comes from the finding aid, not from the letters.

Can a regiment tell me where an ancestor actually was?

Yes — unit diaries and movement records place a regiment day by day, so identifying the unit converts a service record into an itinerary you can follow through a war.

What about ancestors who deserted or were punished?

Those records survive too, in courts-martial registers and desertion notices, and they are often unusually detailed — including physical descriptions circulated to find the person.
